I have been a subscriber to,  and investor in Netflix for some time.

There are many things about Netflix that interest me - ad free subscription content, super personalized recommendations, the idea that “sleep” is their only competition - but the thing that interests me most right now is the idea that Netflix Originals will undermine Region Codes as a method of digital rights management.

Huh?

As a consumer who has lived in America (home), Europe and Asia, it is beyond annoying to not be able to watch a movie or TV show that was bought in one place in another place.

Region Codes were theoretically developed to control release dates for movie releases on DVDs, but they seem to apply to more than DVDS and they don't expire ... so they are not a good solution.

They are worse than "not a good solution".

The intent behind Netflix investing original programming is not to undermine DVD rights management, but one should be thankful for unintended consequences.

Over time and in aggregate, Netflix's locally-produced originals should produce a global marketplace of restriction-free content allowing watchers to discover new likes.

For example, last year Netflix Japan announced a big new play in anime / アニメー /, or animated movies.

They announced important deals with local studios that will not only support, but grow the Japanese anime production market for distribution around the world.

A specific example of this is a new set of Ghost In The Shell movies. Produced in up to 20 languages, these new releases will keep the title vital, and allow people with interest in anime around the world to watch via their subscription.

This approach lets Netflix's personalization algorithm work with fewer constraints. And that is a good thing, because I'm pretty sure that people who like Japanese anime don't all live in Region 2.
