The Crown

We just finished watching the final episode (E10) of the final season (S6) of The Crown on Netflix.

That makes 60 episodes in all.

The Crown follows the life and reign of Queen Elizabeth II from her wedding in in 1947 through 2005. The final season takes place during Tony Blair's prime ministership.

In case you missed it, The Crown is a lavish production distributed by Netflix, and made by Left Bank Pictures (a subsidiary of Sony, an equity investment of the BBC).

Season 6 takes viewers on a royal tour making stops at Balmoral Castle, Windsor Castle, Eton College, Buckingham Palace, Kensington Palace, University of St. Andrews, Toronto, Kenya, Malta ... and several visits to The Ritz Hotel (in Paris and London).

There were more than 20 actors in the main cast.

Five different directors received credits, plus one writer (Peter Morgan).

The filming took eight months (Sep 2022 to Apr 2023) and was paused twice - once for the death of the real QE II, and later for her funeral.

Viewership of S6 (36.9 million viewing hours) was much lower than S5 (107.4 million viewing hours) but one must remember that S5 debuted just months after the real deaths of QE II and Prince Philip.

Despite the low numbers, S6 wrapped the series nicely, and one can only wish for more television of this quality.

While there have been criticisms on historical accuracy, there isn’t any obvious character washing. Everyone comes across a little good, a little bad. Complex, as the world really is.

Even if it IS necessary to invent thoughts and conversations in order to present individual histories like these, the series does it in a way that creates interest and puts things into context.

Fun Fact: Did you know the actress who plays the elder QE II (Imelda Staunton) is, in real life, married to actor Jim Carter, also known as Carson from Downton Abby. Two of my favorites!
