Poster House

Poster House

Last weekend I visited Poster House to see an exhibition of Soviet Film Posters from the 1920s.

Following the Bolshevik Revolution, a group of young artists emerged ready to inspire a new Soviet culture.

As the new government embraced cinema as the preferred means of propaganda, these designers created dynamic, experimental posters, papering the streets with wild colors and arresting images to pull the citizenry into the movie theaters.

The exhibition explores this bright age of Soviet graphic design, showcasing the work of Alexander Rodchenko, the Stenberg brothers and others.

The show was curated by Angelina Lippert, and exhibition design is by Isometric Studio.

Poster House's mission is to present the impact, culture and design of posters, both as historical documents and methods of contemporary visual communication.

Through exhibitions, educational events and a growing permanent collection, the museum explores the effect of posters on society with the aim of improving public design literacy.

The gallery’s architectural design, by LTL Architects, uses the length of the space to evoke a sidewalk and city walls on which to present the work.

Poster House opened in June of 2019, and is the first museum of its type in the United States.
