Bosworth's Operations

Bosworth's Operations

Andrew Bosworth is a visionary at Meta Reality Labs, and the posts on his personal website give one good read after another about working in a chaotic and future-shaping environment.

A recent one on the topic of Operations caught my attention because I am the head of operations for a global advertising agency and although my agency is not creating the world's next computing platform (the MV), there are lessons to be learned.

Bosworth opens with the observation that while good ideas are important to meaningful innovation, good work is even more so because a strategy that doesn't get executed isn't a strategy at all.

Bosworth defines Operations as a system for making progress against a goal in a reliable, timely manner.

This is a practical definition, making good work dependent on (1) a shared, accepted higher purpose and (2) standardized, measurable increments of progress.

Regular reviews with his teams are how Bosworth keeps things moving in the right direction and on pace. Answering questions. Removing blockers. Getting unstuck.

Bosworth has much else to say, but in my opinion it is better in his own words ... here
