Lucy Rie

Lucy Rie

Lucy Rie (1902-1995) was one of the twentieth century’s most celebrated and iconic potters.

She combined an acute understanding of modernism with the skills of her chosen craft.

During her sixty year career she refined her work developing new shapes and surfaces that were distinctly her own.

Rie's delicately shaped bowls, bottles and other vessels reflect her commitment to simplicity and clarity of form, earning both critical and popular acclaim.

One of the many interesting intersections in Rie's career was with Japanese fashion designer Issey Miyake.

In 1989 Miyake put on an exhibition of her work at the Sogetsu Gallery in Tokyo. Tadao Ando designed the display space and lighting.

In the exhibition catalogue, Miyake wrote “Lucie Rie pots reflect her beautiful and dignified soul.”

I can’t think of a better way to put it. So will leave it at that.
