Uniqlo x Murakami x Doraemon
Uniqlo / ユニコロ / is a fast-fashion retailer.
Takashi Murakami / 村上 隆 / is a contemporary artist.
Doraemon / ドラえもん / is a cartoon robotic cat from the 22nd Century.
Uniqlo x Murakami x Doraemon is a collaboration that features characters from Murakami's work and Doraemon on Uniqlo t-shirts.
Although I don't have strong brand love for any of them individually, their collaboration interests me.
Uniqlo has successfully used collaborations to evolve its product and story in the past. More classic? Ines De La Fressange. More design-y? Marimekko.
Mixing characters from modern art (Murakami's flowers) and popular culture (Fujio's robo-cat) is unexpected, but it might just work too.
What is the intention?
To me, it reminds that these brands are Japanese, global, and still very vital.
Murakami has a word for this: superflat.
Superflatness refers to the flattening of forms in Japanese graphic art, animation, pop culture and, at the same time, the shallowness of contemporary consumer culture.
So it's time to say "こんにちは" superflat, superfast fashion.
