The intermediateque (IMT) is a permanent, natural-history themed exhibition managed by the Unversity of Tokyo located in the KITTE shopping center in Marunouchi.
Is it strange that there is a university science museum in a high-end retail complex?
In a word, no.
In Japan, experience architects are mixing together shops, restaurants and culture in a constant and sometimes-unexpected swirl of experimentation to try to identify and create the optimal mix of comfort, depth, and fun.
In Ginza Six, there is a Shinto Shrine and a Noh Theater.
In Tokyo Midtown, there is an Design Gallery and a Light Garden.
In Sony Park, there is a Video Gaming Park and a Rollerskating Rink.
These varied experiences connect something that Japanese people like to do (shopping) with culture, entertainment, and yes, even science education.
