Hank Willis Thomas

I first came across Hank Willis Thomas’s work in print, in The New York Times Op-Ed pages.

Thomas uses words like other the editorialists, but makes his points artfully rather than verbally alone.

The work plays on connections between words, visuals and meanings.

These connections invite a response - the viewer’s share - which for me can be more complex than the prompt.

Willis is prolific and works in sculpture, photgraphy, mixed media and video often on the subject of race and the Black American experience.

I wouldn’t say I am a fan of political/editorial art, with much of it designed to divide us from our shared humanity, but I am a fan of some of Hank Willis Thomas’s work. Like this one ↑ .
