I just listened to the first episode of a new podcast called “How To Citizen With Baratunde”.
It’s a show about power.
Specifically the power of citizens to organize and change society.
The title uses “To Citizen” as a verb deliberately to signal that active participation is needed to lead to better outcomes.
And that citizen-ing is more than voting.
Season 1, Episode 1 is centered on a discussion with activist and Sikh faith leader Valerie Kaur, who asks the question “What if this darkness is not the darkness of the tomb, but of the womb?”
That is, what if the lack of clarity we are experiencing is the primordial darkness that precedes the birth of a new America?
I won't replay their conversation here because, well, its better to hear it in their own voices.
The “With Baratunde” in the title refers to Baratunde Thurston, a Black author, activist and comedian who is, by now, well-known-enough to not need to use his last name.
