Frank Lloyd Wright Textiles

Frank Lloyd Wright Textiles

Today I visited The Met Fifth Avenue to see a small exhibition of Frank Lloyd Wright textiles.

Wright created this colorful series of printed fabrics in 1954, at the urging of his friend Elizabeth Gorden, editor of House Beautiful magazine.

Wright directed the work himself at his studio, Taliesin.

The fabrics were sold through F. Schumacher and Co.

It was the first of a series of commercial ventures for Wright that would also include wallpapers, paint, carpets, and furniture.

The following year Gorden devoted an entire issue of House Beautiful to Wright’s home design work, and the fabrics sold especially well.

The Wright/Gorden/Schumacher cooperation provides a lasting example of the mutually inspirational relationship between design, communication and commerce.
